EUR 8 million investment for a second slaughter line in Utena
"BIOVELA Group has invested €8 million in the most modern pork slaughter line in the Baltics. According to Žilvinas Lenktaitis, Managing Director of BIOVELA-UTENOS MĖSA, the reason for this investment decision is the growing demand for local fresh pork in the Baltic region. The new slaughter line in Utena is expected to be fully operational this autumn and will allow the company to double its production volume.
Meeting the growing demand for fresh Lithuanian pork
Buying and processing fresh pork is one of the main activities of BIOVELA-UTENOS MĖSA. Žilvinas Lenktaitis, the company's CEO, points out that the scarcity of Lithuanian pigmeat is not meeting the expectations of the growing consumer and market.
"Lithuanians are increasingly appreciating local, high-quality fresh pork, so we are increasing production volumes to meet this demand. This fact is supported by a consumer survey conducted by Havas Group and Norstat LT in July, which showed that the country's population most often associates Lithuanian products with quality, and for two out of three respondents this determines the choice of fresh meat.
In Lithuania, the consumption of pigmeat exceeds the number of pigs produced, and is decreasing, so that some raw material has to be imported from abroad. According to the official statistics portal, at the beginning of 2024, there will be 13.1% fewer pigs in the country compared to 2019. Our aim is to stimulate the growth of local farms and to increase the supply of specifically Lithuanian-origin, top-quality pigmeat to the market. With the opening of the new slaughter line, we will be able to double our production volumes," notes the CEO of BIOVELA-UTENOS MĖSA.
According to Ž. Lenktaitis, the company's new pig slaughtering line, which has received an investment of EUR 8 million, will be the most efficient in the Baltic States and will have a capacity of 300 pigs per hour. In addition, the additional capacity will free up space on the existing slaughter line, allowing the company to increase its beef production.
Innovation and focus on sustainability
The new slaughter line is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that meets and exceeds European Union standards, which will help ensure not only the efficiency and sustainability of production processes, but also animal welfare.
"We strive to make the slaughtering process as advanced as possible, introducing the latest animal stunning systems, special lighting and visual effects solutions. All of this helps to reduce the stress on the animals, eliminates the risk of injury and improves the quality of the raw material", says Ž. Lenktaitis.
The new slaughter line also features advanced production accounting systems that will allow you to know the exact origin of the raw material, the time spent in the process, and which products it was used to produce. This will not only improve meat safety and ensure the highest quality standards, but will also help to provide pig farmers with a timely indication of risks in their processes. The abattoir has also introduced advanced energy-saving solutions, including solar power, waste heat recovery, LED lighting and intelligent ventilation systems.
According to Ž. Lenktaitis, the company has taken a sustainable decision to implement the expansion project in its existing premises, thus reducing the amount of waste and the need for new materials.
The company is also focusing on improving the working conditions of its employees by modernising rest areas, installing new ventilation systems and ergonomic workstations equipped with mechanised tools. It is expected that more than 60 employees will work on the line and service it.
"Our priority is the well-being of our employees. That's why we've designed workplaces around the specific functions they perform to reduce physical strain. The installation of modern workstations will meet the essential needs expressed by employees," says Ž. Lenktaitis.
